Here are two images you may remember from television. The first was the Oscar ceremony. Simon Beaufoy won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay for Slumdog Millionaire. It is no secret that Beaufoy’s script differed significantly from the book by Vikas Swarup on which Slumdog was based. But Beaufoy made it a point to thank Swarup on stage and to say that without his book there would be no screenplay, no movie, and no Oscars.

Later that same night Slumdog director Danny Boyle while accepting his own Oscar apologised to the choreographer Longinus, whose name had been left out of the end credits of Slumdog. When the film won the Best Picture Oscar, the entire unit went on stage including Vikas Swarup who had been flown in to Los Angeles by the makers of the film at their expense.

And here is a second image. It is a press conference in Noida on Friday. The cast and makers of 3 Idiots are answering questions from the press as part of the publicity campaign for the film. When journos keep asking about the lack of recognition accorded to author Chetan Bhagat, on whose book the film is based, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra stands up, points a finger at an inquisitive journalist and shouts ‘Shut up’. Chopra is prevented from saying much more by his colleagues and Aamir Khan then swings into damage control mode. He tries to sound reasonable but manages to abuse Chetan Bhagat, calls him publicity hungry – a bit rich considering the stunts Aamir staged to gain publicity for 3 Idiots – and berates journos for believing Bhagat.

What is the difference between the two images?

I think one word sums it up: grace.

Danny Boyle, Simon Beaufoy and the Slumdog unit behaved with grace. Vinod Chopra and his star behaved with a complete lack of grace.

If you’ve missed the controversy, here’s what it is about. Vinod Chopra bought the rights to Chetan Bhagat’s novel and then turned it into 3 Idiots. Nobody disputes that 3 Idiots is based on the Bhagat novel and indeed Bhagat is credited as such in the movie.

The point of discord is the placing of the credit. Bhagat suggests that it should have been at the beginning along with all the other writer credits. Instead it appears at the very end.

In his defence, Chopra says that the end is an appropriate place for the credit because his scriptwriters, including Rajkumar Hirani, the film’s director, changed so much of the story that the final film has little to do with Bhagat’s novel.

Bhagat says that this is not true. Yes of course there is a lot in the film that he did not write but it is still recognisably his story and on his blog he lists several points of similarity.

For the purposes of argument, I am quite prepared to believe Aamir and Chopra when they deny Bhagat’s version of events. I am also prepared to accept that the screenplay is significantly different from Bhagat’s novel.

But here’s the thing: it shouldn’t make a difference.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra is contractually obliged to give Bhagat a credit as the writer of the source material for the movie. So, the issue is not whether the script is 95 per cent based on the book or 25 per cent derived from Bhagat’s novel. The only issue is one of placing. Should Bhagat have been part of the opening credits? And was it graceless to bury his name in the end credits?

In Hollywood, it is not uncommon for script writers to significantly alter the plots of source material or to only use a part of the book. Slumdog differs significantly from Vikas Swarup’s Q&A. The Firm dispenses with John Grisham’s ending and invents a new one. In Papillon, a major character who was not even in the book was invented by the scriptwriters. David Lean’s Dr Zhivago junked the second half of the book. The recent My Sister’s Keeper differs substantially from Jodi Picoult’s bestseller of the same name.

In every single case, however, the original novel was properly credited and the author mentioned in the opening credits. Nobody believed that this detracted in any way from the screenwriter’s achievements. It just demonstrated a certain grace and honesty on the part of the movie’s maker.

So why, you may well ask, is Vidhu Vinod Chopra being so bloody minded about denying Chetan Bhagat his opening credit?

The honest answer is I simply cannot understand Chopra’s pettiness.

I hold no brief for any of the principals in this drama. At the HT, we’ve had a bad experience with Chetan Bhagat, who we believe behaved unprofessionally when he was a columnist. On the other hand, I have met Vinod Chopra, have worked with his wife and have always thought well of him. Personally, I have the highest regard and admiration for Aamir Khan, whom I know slightly.

So, this is not about personalities. It’s not even about principle – Chopra has conceded the principle by giving Bhagat his credit even if he has buried it in the end.

It is about grace.

What does it cost the makers of 3 Idiots to give Chetan Bhagat his credit in the space where a writer’s credit is traditionally placed in the international movie business? It would make no difference to the movie’s massive box-office performance. We would not think any less of Rajkumar Hirani, a fine director with a great track record. And Aamir’s reputation as the most consistently successful star of our times would remain intact.

Finally, it comes down to how big a human being is prepared to be. Even people who did not think much of Slumdog Millionaire were overwhelmed when Danny Boyle used the Oscar platform to say sorry to Longinus for leaving his name out of the credits. That was the single-biggest night in Boyle’s life, a culmination of everything he had worked for. And he still found the time to mention an Indian dance director he would probably never meet again.

That’s what I call class.

Our own film industry, however, has not covered itself in glory by the way in which it has behaved over Bhagat’s credit. Our producers, directors and actors have come across as mean-spirited and petty and ready to get into fights over something as minor as the placing of a credit.

Just as India has the potential to become a superpower in the 21st century so Bollywood has the opportunity to become the world’s leading film industry in this century. Certainly, we are not short of talent or of audiences.

What we are short of, however, is grace. And our directors need to learn that no amount of box-office success can buy you class. Our film industry will never hit the big time if its leading lights continue to think like small-timers.

It’s time for Aamir, Chopra and Hirani to show some grace. Otherwise they risk coming across as three idiots.

The Great Escape….

ya its offcourse the famous and my favorite hollywood flim….where prisoners try to escape to their freedom…they succeed too….that was what it was for me when i started for the best kerala trip….

But while starting i had a small problem or a bug (like in our terms) saying to me again and again man this is a trip when will the party start…my mobile rang..it was Suubu…let me introduce him…he was first introduced to me by stanley and mani…ha the two guys from ISG and my fresher batch mates…very good friends of mine and always had a good time when they were around me…have loads to tell abt them but lets get back to subbu…cool PM(he says it whenever he is hanged-over) he is also from a team called ISG(nothin to tell abt it as it is not a CLIENT project)…well subbu and me had a great time…most of the weekends ever since i knew him..excellent person to move with….ok lets go back to the trip…subbu called me and asked me to meet them in quality Inn sabari..in tnagar…finally!!!! party started….but the real party was after i went in….!!! thats a big story of a cockroach, a cake and a chicken tandoori…that will discuss in a different topic….but i met a new person named sam…who believes that in running everything will be alright…his passion is to see Bison running…anything and everything which is running, sam falls for it i guess…but a great guy and good to move along…my pal stanley was about to finish a full bottle…and waitin for chicken tandoori…and mani finishing of our side dish… anyway i started and had a good chat…ohhh i forgot yet another person karthik(not me) …ha this guy laughs for everything…not a bad one though….he is from my town so always had great discussions with him…but this guy slept for most of the trip…after this small party we started to the railway station for the big party…there i met Thangs alias thangaraj in 3/4 pants…yet another good guy to move with…Inside the railway station i met yet another two of my batch mates….prasanna and aravind….yet another best guys in my batch…ah lots of good guys…i am lucky!!!!!!!!!!!

Then started our main discussion on bookin a cab and what is the plan for the trip. he he he he …but we thought lets have lunch first and then carry on our trip…excellent and a heavy lunch for non-veg eaters…for veg eaters it was not good…

ok..ok..ok…where is the enjoyment each and every moment of this trip i enjoyed…

only day-1 half day is over..will update the second half and the second day in my next…now feelin sleepy…

Wow after hectic long days i am back to my lovely blog….After playing with Ruby on Rails(ROR) and Django….i am back again on my part time project completely in ROR….I have my plans ready on an issue logger application…which i have plans to make it open source toooo….but as of now i have started my work on it….

hmmm for my daily updates follow me on twitter @kartgreen…..

Django…& Python

Its been 10 days since i have updated my blog…hmmmm was busy with ruby on rails,….learnt a lot in it…now another new stuff…its Python what else i would be working on…i struck my head so many times before….working on python web scripting..i was not satisfied or i was bit lazy of not making it good…but now i have found what i exactly wanted…Django a web framework for python…DONT REPEAT YOURSELF(DRY) is what all latest programmers and hackers are working on….Django gives a cutting edge in this….WOW…i am just starting with DRY concepts its cooool…ok lets get to business as always it is trying python in linux is easy because python comes with most of the linux distros….Django we have to download the latest .tar file and get started…its easy… but in windows its not the same…

Windows saga….
1: First download python from activestate website
2: install it
3: try your hand on the shell for sometime…try some basic examples so
you could get familiar with python…even if u dont install python its
not a problem
4: Now we need not necessarily download Django ffrom django
site…what else for windows…???
5: Go for Instant-Django….its excellent…this also has python 2.6 in it…
6: Just install or extract it and click on the “start.bat”…this sets the
default paths…
7: And what uuuuu rrrrrr on….Djangooooo…..start experiencing it….
8: For download just search instant django..
9: For reference http://www.djangoproject.com and http://www.djangobook.com
10: The saga ends….

ok…i have to explore more….but in my next blog…will explain clearly on models…views…blah…blah…blah….

One last thing…power of open source rocksssss……

bye

Instant Rails……

Ruby on rails… i started of with a one_click_installer…which installs ruby easily just like a setup…but after that we have to download and install rails using gem…this also i did….after installing there started my journey towards web development using Ruby on Rails….but had a problem, i was able to develop smaller and simple pages. I almost forgot that i had to use databases again i installed MySQl…ruby comes with a built in support of Sqlite…but i am not well versed in it so i installed mysql then modified the yaml file and then it was fine…one thing to remember is ruby runs on webrick server which is an inbuilt server. The biggest problem in webrick is we have to make the server run in one command prompt which should not be closed, even if u close it accidently server will be down….i needed a normal server which would always be running…one and only choice was apache…but i had trouble installing and working with ruby…..what do i do…i need ruby, rails, mysql and apache running at a single point of time…

Instant Rails…i came across this application which is more easy and excellent to use…this has apache server, mysql, ruby and rails….this even comes with phpmyadmin for mysql database….this is similar to easy_php which has phpmyadmin for mysql, mysql, apache and php….this is a superb solution rather i would say its ann innovation….this is completely an standalone…just a zipped folder….unzip it and run the InstantRails.exe and you are on….no dependency on any stuff….everything is the folder….now i have started working on my ambitious application…after experimenting smaller stuffs….anyway in the coming days you will hear more on ruby on rails from meeeeeeeee…!!!!!!!!!!!

One big fact…. running and configuring Ruby on Rails(RoR) in any linux is easy…. i tried in mandriva, redhat and opensuse..it was cool…but windows is what i have explained from top…..

i am just starting to get my hands dirty on Ruby….i just set ruby on rails for web application starting to practice on the sample web application…..wow is the word i have for it…….its just fun and easy to use and code….waiting to develop some coooooooooooolllllll applications !!!!!!!!!!!

wow…is the word to use for this great event organized by efi…..i am really happy to have attended this event….let me give a brief overview of what happened……March 12 to 14

Day-1:

the first day was the off course the inaugural day….and then started of with C-DAC director-general S.RamaKrishnan….sharing his thoughts on Open Source and communities and how government of india adopts it….then we had a session on government projects from NIC….then it started the development syndrome….perot systems started the keynote with a question of why we use FOSS for s/w development…..it was a good one…then we had the cool topic rather a different topic to start with open source of how do we migrate to FOSS….with industrial experts from Ingres..Redhat..HCL and OSSCube….hmmm….it was good to know people are movin away from proprietary….
Next was my favorite i would say….it was on technologies…s/w platforms..languages…where i heard a lot of things about Ruby from Dibya Prakash(gosh i liked the way he presented and wanted to get my hands dirty on Ruby)…Python Django from Supreet Sethi…Mono from PK Mishra(Novell) and Eclipse from Ashish K Mathur(IBM)….it was really great….hearing rare combinations…for all we had QandA sessions toooo…next was FOSS databases…DB discussed were MySQL, postgresql and INGRES by John Smedley(Senior Architect, Ingres) it seemed ok….third was a quality session on FOSS on Quality…from Industrial experts….the quality tool i liked was SubVersion(SVN) by Buvan(collabnet)….last was a session on open source communities by ESSENTIA…..day closes…i forgot to mention had a good lunch toooo….

Day-2
the day was for mobilesss…..it was Developer Mobile track…it started of with Narendra bhandari(Director, Software Services, Intel AP) giving us an overview on Linux on mobiles and MOBLIN…..then we had a session on Open mobile systems which was on OPENMOKO project and development by Hooja…who gave about 5 devices with various OS which were developed using OPENMOKO…the devices were cool….it was good looking at android and debian on mobilesssssss……..the next on platforms for mobile devices…which was also great….last was developing software stack using FOSS….which was good seeing discussing various platforms in detail…i started of to office…after a great lunch…

Day-3
Gosh i was late for the day….i staright away went to java workshop..which had already began….this was a session from HCl…it was good on topics…findbugs, junit, emma and profiling….i did not sit to finish….then i shifted to the developers zone where a session from Chennai LUG(Linux users club) on distros was going on…it was a good one with various distros…and what they do…then we had somethin og desktop tools…which was fine….then we had lunch…post lunch we had a session on communities and linux users groups from Chennai LUG….then i went for a workshop on Ruby…which was a good one i expected a bigger one but it was rather short in time….then in the main zone we had a session which i would say the best of the whole from Redhaun…on compiere and Adempiere(ERP Tools) this he had focussed on how the community keeps the projects alive…we even had a session on TCS and FOSS…this was a good one toooo……….one of the main topics was carrer trends which had industrial panel members addressing it…finally OSI Tech Days, Chennai comes to an end….

the three days i heard and learnt a lot…..only thing i missed was TWEETUP(Twitter meetup) ….i missed the beer too on tweetup……..hmmmm…on the whole Linux and FOSS communities are pushing proprietary to adapt open source…which is good sign for the developers……

Welcome to My Blog on ………………. Thats what i have been thinkin, whether to start of with Open source…Linux kernel…Security…..hmmmmm……what do i blog on or what i do day today…….i have a diary to write my personal….let me go for the technical world of open source itself…thank god i made up my mind sooooo early……anyway u r all welcome to see it……
