wow…is the word to use for this great event organized by efi…..i am really happy to have attended this event….let me give a brief overview of what happened……March 12 to 14
Day-1:
the first day was the off course the inaugural day….and then started of with C-DAC director-general S.RamaKrishnan….sharing his thoughts on Open Source and communities and how government of india adopts it….then we had a session on government projects from NIC….then it started the development syndrome….perot systems started the keynote with a question of why we use FOSS for s/w development…..it was a good one…then we had the cool topic rather a different topic to start with open source of how do we migrate to FOSS….with industrial experts from Ingres..Redhat..HCL and OSSCube….hmmm….it was good to know people are movin away from proprietary….
Next was my favorite i would say….it was on technologies…s/w platforms..languages…where i heard a lot of things about Ruby from Dibya Prakash(gosh i liked the way he presented and wanted to get my hands dirty on Ruby)…Python Django from Supreet Sethi…Mono from PK Mishra(Novell) and Eclipse from Ashish K Mathur(IBM)….it was really great….hearing rare combinations…for all we had QandA sessions toooo…next was FOSS databases…DB discussed were MySQL, postgresql and INGRES by John Smedley(Senior Architect, Ingres) it seemed ok….third was a quality session on FOSS on Quality…from Industrial experts….the quality tool i liked was SubVersion(SVN) by Buvan(collabnet)….last was a session on open source communities by ESSENTIA…..day closes…i forgot to mention had a good lunch toooo….
Day-2
the day was for mobilesss…..it was Developer Mobile track…it started of with Narendra bhandari(Director, Software Services, Intel AP) giving us an overview on Linux on mobiles and MOBLIN…..then we had a session on Open mobile systems which was on OPENMOKO project and development by Hooja…who gave about 5 devices with various OS which were developed using OPENMOKO…the devices were cool….it was good looking at android and debian on mobilesssssss……..the next on platforms for mobile devices…which was also great….last was developing software stack using FOSS….which was good seeing discussing various platforms in detail…i started of to office…after a great lunch…
Day-3
Gosh i was late for the day….i staright away went to java workshop..which had already began….this was a session from HCl…it was good on topics…findbugs, junit, emma and profiling….i did not sit to finish….then i shifted to the developers zone where a session from Chennai LUG(Linux users club) on distros was going on…it was a good one with various distros…and what they do…then we had somethin og desktop tools…which was fine….then we had lunch…post lunch we had a session on communities and linux users groups from Chennai LUG….then i went for a workshop on Ruby…which was a good one i expected a bigger one but it was rather short in time….then in the main zone we had a session which i would say the best of the whole from Redhaun…on compiere and Adempiere(ERP Tools) this he had focussed on how the community keeps the projects alive…we even had a session on TCS and FOSS…this was a good one toooo……….one of the main topics was carrer trends which had industrial panel members addressing it…finally OSI Tech Days, Chennai comes to an end….
the three days i heard and learnt a lot…..only thing i missed was TWEETUP(Twitter meetup) ….i missed the beer too on tweetup……..hmmmm…on the whole Linux and FOSS communities are pushing proprietary to adapt open source…which is good sign for the developers……
